It's either I missed the part where this movie was supposed to be good or I just didn't like it at all.

There are movies that still leave an impression or make an impact even thought they're slow-paced or look low-budget. So a movie doesn't have to be a grand production for me to be blown away. Even then, this movie failed to do just that. It felt so dull and lifeless. The story was good but the execution didn't amplify its goodness.

I'm not ruling out a mistake on my part though. This movie is quite popular and is often included in people's top 10 Japanese movies. That fact makes me question my own perspective and understanding of the movie. Did I fail to see what the movie was really about? I'm not satisfied with it.

To sum it all up, I think this movie is a bit overrated. Maybe that's where my disappointment is coming from. After hearing good words about it, I might have expected far more than what the movie could offer.

I'm not really a fan of movies which are originally tv series/dramas/sitcoms. These movies tend to look like 2-hour collections of good clips from the series. A perfect example of a drama turned to a movie that I didn't really like would be "Unstoppable Marriage". The story was incoherent and the movie looked rushed. It came out looking like a collection of the good stuff from the drama. But "Old Miss Diary", originally a tv series, proved to me that some movies that came from tv serials are actually good.

This movie showcased the good chemistry between Ji Hyeon-woo and Ye Ji-won despite their age gap, Ye Ji-won (the lady) being older by 8 years. Ji-won was perfect for the role and she pulled the funny drama-queen role off perfectly. Hyeon-woo's performance was also good enough to make me wish that he was real.

First of all, the storyline was fresh for me. I haven't seen a movie with this kind of story yet or I might have seen one already but the previous might not have been good enough to make an impression.

This is a quality film that everyone should watch. It doesn't look like a high-budget film but it was able to pull off the story and relay the message effectively.

The first few seconds of the movie grabbed both my eyes and my mind. It stirred my curiosity and it never let go of me. Each scene was timed perfectly, never going beyond what's comfortable to watch. The pacing was perfect and the coherence was good. As always, my measurement of how compact a movie is based on how many hours the movie felt like compared to its actual length. For this movie, it felt shorter by an hour. I didn't notice that I have already been watching it for more than an hour.

I can't praise the actors enough for their perfect, magnificent, brilliant acting. Both Sol Kyung-gu and Moon So-ri did a very good job in this film. They both fit their characters perfectly, making the movie feel so real like it was happening in front of my eyes. I have to emphasize Moon So-ri's award-winning performance in this movie. I didn't read reviews about the movie so I had no idea about what I was watching. When I first saw her, I thought she was just an extra. I thought she was someone who really had cerebral palsy. But when I saw a close up shot, her body was normal as compared to the image I had of someone with cerebral palsy. People with cerebral palsy tend to be skin and bones and they don't really have muscles. I guess they can't totally conceal Moon So-ri's flesh. But that's just a little speck that can be overlooked.

This award-winning movie earned Director Lee Chang-dong a Special Director's award and Moon So-ri the Best New Actress Award at the Venice Film Festival. I'm not really surprised. They are brilliant.

Honestly, I didn't know that it was a true-to-life story until I finished watching the movie and started writing this entry. The movie failed to grab my full attention. There were some interesting points, which were not followed through by something more interesting or at least something that's equally interesting. I think that there's no problem with the story since it happened in real life. I'm pointing at the poor execution. The makers had a good story to start with. They should have at least tried to make the movie more gripping and more effective. Even though it was supposed to be a biopic, they failed to centralize the theme on Su-hyon's life. The story strayed so far at times and the story looked like it was the biopic of Yuri. During those moments, the film felt incoherent and it was pretty hard to tell whose story it was. It's unfortunate that such a good story had to be told in such an ineffective way.

I hated the part where they showed his heroic deed. He was supposed to be the hero but then the scene where he was saving the man who fell onto the tracks was overshadowed by the scenes where Yuri was. I didn't even cry. I would've cried if they used some scoring during that time and maybe some flashback of him and his family, friends, and Yuri or just a collection of clips from the movie. I don't know whether it's allowed or not but as a true-to-life movie, they should've shown pictures of the real person just to add more effect. It would've been hair-raising if I saw the real man's face.

There were a lot of things happening at one time but they failed to include the stuff that would've nailed it.

I think there's someone else who'd be perfect for Kitano Kii's role. I'm not saying that she's not a good actress. It's her looks. She looked too innocent or too simple for the role. Kitano Kii faded into the background especially with the pretty manager and keyboard player around. Jin's acting wasn't that mind-blowing either. I can see better actors doing it like Yamapi and Kamenashi Kazuya.

The movie was also trying to tell a lot of stories at once. I didn't really understand what it was trying to be. Was it a love story? Or a story of success? Success story of the band? Or of Kitano Kii's role? There were a lot of different stories that didn't have a clear connection. The stories were connected but then the connection didn't have a clear story. They should've focused on one story more. I would've preferred if they went solid on the success story of the band. The makers were trying to fit the love angle in but it just didn't blend well with the rest of the story.

The ending was good though. I love watching Japanese movies because of their endings. It's almost always "guess your own ending". Other people might not want that kind of movie but I do.

Oh and before I forget. The movie's soundtrack is amazing. I fell in love with "Hatachi no Sensou".

I cried buckets. So far, this is the best Kim Rae-won movie I've ever watched. The story was great, KRW's acting was excellent. I can't praise him enough for his brilliant performance in this film. Despite being a drama movie, the pacing was fast. It felt like the movie was shorter than it actually was.

There are some weird stuff that I noticed though:
- I don't know if they really allow prisoners to carry pens in prison.
- They didn't have guns in this movie. It's kind of weird cuz it was partly a gangster movie.

I feel guilty about giving this movie a low rating. It is a good movie just like "The Way Home" but the story's pacing is too slow. But it is an effective story, nonetheless. It made me cry a couple of times.

GOOD PARTS:
- Despite being a war movie, there were no bloody scenes. It was light and funny scenes were sprinkled all throughout the movie. The ending wrapped the movie up beautifully. It answered all the questions I had while watching.

BAD PARTS:
- Some overlooked details - There was this scene where Matabe and the Princess were fussing about Shinichi's family car and the 2 bandits who fought with Matabe by the lake came running. They bent down and begged Matabe to accept them as his soldiers. Everyone who saw the car was surprised but the 2 bandits were not. I thought it was weird that they didn't notice it or react to it since everybody else did. Even a short moment of surprise would have done the job.
- The movie is sooo boring. The pacing is too slow.
- Kusanagi and Aragaki don't have chemistry. I think it's not just because of the characters but they both look weird together. It's like something feels off. It's not the age gap. They just don't have chemistry.
- The movie is a half-baked love story, half-baked war movie, half-baked comedy, half-baked adventure. It is half-baked all over so it didn't have much impact.

GOOD PARTS:
- The story is funny and heart-warming despite the heavy theme. The scenes developed gradually from funny to serious to heart-warming. The conclusion cleanly tied the lose ends together, leaving no unanswered questions.

BAD PARTS:
- The pacing didn't match the scenes. The movie's overall pacing is too slow, making it a little boring. Some scenes also lack impact, especially the ending. The funny scenes were funny but they didn't make me laugh hard. The sad scenes were sad but they didn't make me cry.

- The thing that stood out for me in this film is the chemistry of Kim Hye-su and Lee Min-ki. Despite their 15-year age gap, I felt the chemistry between their characters. The cast was made in heaven. They all fit their characters perfectly, which made the movie feel so real like it was happening right in front of my eyes.
- I think that it's a very good film but I can't recommend it to everyone because some scenes are not suitable for very young audiences (parental guidance is advised, lol). It has some uncensored nudity and sex scenes not appropriate for the youngsters. But the story's good, nonetheless. It is fast-paced, compact, relevant, and fun to watch.

- It's a cute movie and is somehow fun to watch cuz there are some funny scenes. But apart from the cute and funny stuff, nothing else is worth watching. The pacing is too slow, the actors aren't interesting, and the story is quite common. There's nothing particularly special about the movie.

- I watched it once, and I didn't get what story the movie was trying to tell. I didn't know if it was a story about the girl's family or her love life.
- But it was definitely an eye candy for me. Some of the locations where they shot some scenes were breathtaking. I especially liked the scene by the misty/foggy seaside. It was so effective that I felt as if I was there, feeling the cold and damp air against my skin.

- The story was shallow. Arisa Mizuki's acting was also a bit awkward. Her face felt too stiff for her role. Their lines also felt a bit off cuz they sounded like anime characters. But I enjoyed watching every second of the movie. It felt shorter than it actually was, which means I had fun watching it.

- I'm just going to warn you about a very disappointing ending. Well, at least that's what I think. I just hate the way how the villains were killed. They should have suffered more. You'll understand why once you watch the movie. But the bad ending is forgivable since the whole movie is a feast. The ending is a minor flaw that I'm willing to overlook. It's a good movie. You should watch it.

Nakita kong pinaskil ni Captain yung mga katagang "Big mistake to correct a big wrong decision".

Take note! Kumbaga he's a step ahead of them.

Bakit? E pano kung nataranta yung hostage taker at pinagbabaril nya lahat including yung sarili nya? Mission failed agad sila.

At ipinagdarasal kong may mangyaring aksyon tungkol dito.

(2 = Brought out all the right emotions from me (cry, laugh, get angry, cringe... etc), left me in awe;
1 = Almost cried, almost laughed, almost got angry.
0 = It didn't affect me at all.)
- Even with the terrible execution, it the story didn't fail to make me cry.
Acting: 1

1 = The actors were good but the roles weren't really challenging;
0 = The actors need to attend more acting workshops)

1 = Skipped some parts but didn't blink on some;
0 = Skipped more than watched)
- I didn't literally skip more parts though. I'm saying there were a lot of scenes that didn't appeal to me. As I've said, the movie's good from 1:27:00 onwards so I only enjoyed watching 1/4 of it.
Cinematography: 1
(2 = Blew me away, creatively done;
1 = Just okay, nothing special;
0 = Did they even have budget for this movie?)
Scoring: 1
(2 = Helped in bringing out the viewer's emotions and I loved the soundtrack;
1.5 = The scoring matched the scenes or there's at least one song that I loved;
1 = At least the movie had a soundtrack;
0 = I don't remember if it had one)

Recommend? 0
(2 = You'll miss half of your life if you don't watch this;
1 = If you like the genre, watch it;
0 = Watch it only if you want to watch a Korean movie and you've ran out of good movies to watch)
- For those who like family dramas and are thinking of watching this, I'd recommend that you read a review of the movie and watch just the last 30 minutes cuz that's where the good part is. If there's a print version of this story, I would choose that one over the movie. The execution was terrible so the movie came out so boring.

[Rating - KMovie] A Bittersweet Life

Story:
Interest: 1
(2 = I'm so glad I watched it!;
1 = Interesting enough to watch it til the end;
0 = What a waste of time)
- The first hour was boring. All the good stuff was in the 2nd half.
Coherence: 1
(2 = Perfectly crafted story, no missing links, well-thought out, whoever wrote this is a genius;
1.5 = The story seems to have no flaws but it isn't a very challenging story to write;
1 = The story has some flaws in it so the flow isn't really that good, something feels off;
0 = Some scenes strayed too far away from the plot, not properly concluded)
- It's not like I'm saying that the movie is incoherent but the love story felt a little out of place. Yes, it was the main reason why the 'war' broke out but the love angle in this story didn't fit in.

Movie:
Execution: 2
(2 = The director did a magnificent job, the movie was so clean and it felt so real;
1.5 = Above average but not totally impressive;
1 = It was okay but it didn't blow me away;
0 = Did the director have such a low standard?)
- Great attention to detail - one of the things I look for in a movie. This movie had that. There were some flaws but they were minimal enough to be overlooked.
Effect: 2
(2 = Brought out all the right emotions from me (cry, laugh, get angry, cringe... etc), left me in awe;
1 = Almost cried, almost laughed, almost got angry.
0 = It didn't affect me at all.)
- I'm giving it a perfect score for evoking the feeling of wanting the lead to take revenge on the guys who beat him up.
Acting: 2
(2 = The actors were completely lost in their characters, they gave me goosebumps;
1 = The actors were good but the roles weren't really challenging;

1 = If you like the genre, watch it;
0 = You won't miss anything if you don't watch this)
- If only I could recommend the last hour... The movie starts off slow and very boring but the last hour makes up for that. The second half is action-packed and fast-paced, which is why I loved it.
- I didn't like the love angle though. It felt out of place. It didn't affect me at all. The story would've been better if the writer/director just used some other reason why the lead and his boss had a falling apart. Besides, the love angle was so predictable.

- Taught me a valuable lesson: Realize your dreams by doing good.
- I know it's a corny line, sounds like a cliche... but that's what I learned. I realized that there are 2 ways to get what you really want: do it the right way or do it the bad way. Of course, there'd be a corresponding outcome for each method you choose. The latter will give you your goal just the same it's just that you'll get a free ghost to haunt you for the rest of your life.

- Can you imagine Jo In-Seong as a gang leader? Nope? Well, I thought so too. Jo In-Seong's face can't scare a baby, let alone his subordinates and their enemies. But once you watch this movie, you'll know why it had to be him. He's perfect for the role and he did really great.
- Aside from the lead actor, the story was also brilliant. There were a lot of twists and turns, which I loved cuz they were clean. The story branched out at various points, with new characters coming in. If the story was poorly executed, I think branching out would have been a very big problem with its coherence. It would have caused the movie to feel cluttered and lousy. But this movie wasn't cluttered, it was in fact coherent and fast-paced.

- I wasn't really absorbed in it coz I didn't really like the execution. But the story felt so real because it mirrored human nature. It showed how people are naturally sinful, that no matter how we were brought up, no matter how isolated we are from the world, we still have it in us. And it showed how people grow and learn how to seek for forgiveness.

Story:
